I am looking to organise a career’s day for our young children at St Bede’s Catholic Middle School. To give you a quick idea of our school, it is a secondary deemed Middle school. It is located in Redditch, a large town not far from Birmingham and Worcester. At St Bede’s we provide Catholic education to pupils aged 9-13 years from our partnership schools in Redditch and Bromsgrove. We are an academy, part of the Our Lady of the Magnificat – allowing us to be involved in an exciting development of Catholic education in Worcestershire with schools in our Multi Academy. Within our school’s catchment there are a wide dynamic of different socio-economic backgrounds. We are aiming to develop children’s aspirations and offering them a range of potential vocations. It is unrealistic to expect every child in St Bede’s to know their exact career path at the ages of 9-13, yet our Career’s Day is aimed at getting them thinking.

We are aiming for our Career’s Day to go ahead on Friday 27th May 2022 and will be held in the school grounds (B98 7HA).

Specific aims of the day:

  1. To show women in high level roles of responsibility
  2. To show male and female workers breaking gender stereotypes
  3. To show a range of different sectors- construction, the services, retail creative industry etc.
  4. To increase understanding about career paths
  5. To enthuse them about a potential career and offer them a starting goal

The day will be arranged into a series of 1-hour sessions (ideally it would be brilliant if all 5 sessions could be delivered, however if this is not possible and you are available for a morning or afternoon, then you would still be most welcome). Session times will be:

Lesson 1 – 9:00-10:00

Lesson 2- 10:00-11:00

Break – 11:00-11:15

Lesson 3 – 11:15- 12:15

Lunch – 12:15 – 13:20

Lesson 4 – 13:20 – 14:15

Lesson 5 – 14:15 – 15:10

During the day you will have the opportunity to move around the school visiting different classrooms. We have computer rooms, a food room, a library, playground space, a 3-court sports hall and a gym available if you need these facilities. Group sizes will be 30-33 children (ranging from 9-13 years of age) and there will always be adult support within the classroom.

The delivery of the session:

Within the session we would like the children to learn about your own individual career path, qualifications needed for the job, skill sets needed for the jobs, pros and cons of the job, any funny stories or surprises, why you chose the job and then finally we would ask you to deliver a short activity for the pupils to put themselves in your shoes. This could simply be bringing in items from work to pass around and discuss, could be a scenario you could deliver, and they need to solve and so on.

For example, an electrician could demonstrate wiring a plug and allow children to have a go, an architect could hand over a simplified brief and the children generate initial designs, fire fighters could allow children to try on the uniform etc.

We have projectors and whiteboards in every room to be used for the delivery of your presentation if required, yet this is only an option. Resources can also be printed for the delivery of your session.

Should you have any queries, then please don’t hesitate to contact me via my e-mail (sevans@stb.magnificat.org.uk). If you know anyone other companies/individuals interested, please forward this email on.

Many thanks for taking time to read.

Simon Evans
