St Bede’s produced some excellent tournament football to secure a fabulous win in the Girls’ District Tournament at Woodfield on Thursday evening.  As the tournament progressed the team gathered momentum, which culminated in a memorable final win against Walkwood. This was the first time the girls had played for St Bede’s and the squad also contained some Year 5 girls.

In the group stages, the team started slowly, drawing 0-0 with Church Hill; despite having complete domination of the game they could not break down a stubborn defence.  In the second match St Bede’s played against Walkwood and began to move the ball around quickly whilst remaining defensively strong with Phoebe and Jaiann at the back.   Libby was particularly impressive in this game, scoring two goals, whilst the midfield began creating chances through Scarlett and Ella.

After finishing top of the group, St Bede’s opponents in the semi-final were runners up of Group B, Ipsley.  Both teams looked to pass and move and create chances in the early stages. Grace H was extremely hardworking and won many challenges and tackles, whilst Scarlett was finding great space down the right-hand side. Ipsley’s resistance finally broke, and three goals without reply followed for St Bede’s – created from great passing and movement.

In the other semi-final, Woodfield and Walkwood played out a dramatic game which was settled by penalties, with the latter winning through.

The final match was fiercely contested by St Bede’s and Walkwood; it was a pulsating encounter, with both teams having already played each other in the group stages.  St Bede’s began to get into their stride after a tense opening few minutes, passing the ball through the midfield, and using the flanks.  Scarlett and Ella began to find spaces, supported by the tenacity of Grace H and the vision of Libby.  Phoebe and Jaiann continued to be resolute in defence.

The opening goal for St Bede’s came when Ella drove in a corner from the left, which was coolly finished by Grace H.  Walkwood had a couple of half chances, one of which was saved superbly by Ava in goal. With seconds remaining, Scarlett found herself in space down the right-hand side; with one defender to beat she superbly rounded her opponent and fired an unstoppable drive into the corner of the net.  On the restart, time was up and St Bede’s had become the tournament champions !  The team were worthy winners but credit must also go to Walkwood for reaching the final. In the third and fourth place playoff game, Ipsley beat Woodfield.

We are extremely proud of our District winning St Bede’s team and they deserve huge credit for this fantastic achievement.

A special mention must also go to all of the Year 5 and 6 girls, who have regularly attended training since September.  Most weeks there have been over thirty girls at sessions, which has been amazing !

Well done girls!!
