June is traditionally dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
This Divine Heart, full of love and mercy, is the ultimate expression of God’s love for all people. Jesus’ Heart is represented with His Heart pierced, as it was when He died on the cross, the soldier used his spear to check that Jesus had died. It is surrounded by a Crown of Thorns which reminds us of Jesus’ suffering and death and our wrongdoing which wounds the Heart of God when we choose to go our own ways rather than God’s. It has burning flames coming from it which reminds us that God’s Heart burns with deepest, tenderest love for every person and it also the fire of His Holy Spirit. At the top of the Heart, there is a Cross, which reminds us that the cross is at the heart of Jesus and this was the means by which we might be saved and God’s love expressed most fully.
Today’s Special characteristic of the Sacred Heart of Jesus:
Heart of Jesus, obedient unto death, death on the Cross, have mercy on us. Amen.
Month of June – Sacred Heart of Jesus
Every week I will include a special prayer to Our Lord Jesus whose Sacred Heart beats with love for each one of us.
Our prayer to Jesus this week: A prayer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus by St John Henry (Cardinal) Newman.
O most tender and gentle Lord Jesus,
when will my heart have a portion of Your perfections?
When will my hard and stony heart,
my proud heart, my unbelieving,
my impure heart, my narrow, selfish heart,
be melted and conformed to Yours?
O teach me so to contemplate You
that I may become like You,
and to love You sincerely and simply
as You have loved me. Amen
June is also dedicated to the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is our source of life, grace, mercy and power from the Heart of God Himself. His power helps us to live as God wants. He helps us to pray, to love God and others, especially those whom we find difficult to get on with and those who have hurt us in some way. He is our Helper, Sustainer and Friend. May we turn to Him and ask for His help in these days. Every day we will be doing some heavenly gardening as we discover the many characteristics, gifts, fruits, attributes and symbols of the Holy Spirit.
Here is today’s:
Holy Spirit, Spirit of Grace and Prayer, descend upon us! Amen.
Our scripture reading today comes from: The Book of Psalms: (Psalm 31: 1-3)
In You, O Lord, I seek refuge; do not let me ever be put to shame; In your righteousness deliver me. Incline Your ear to me; rescue me speedily. Be a rock of refuge for me, a strong fortress to save me. You are indeed my rock and my fortress; for Your Name’s sake lead me and guide me.”
Our prayers for today: Here is a prayer written by St Thomas More taken from the Daily Prayers.org Website. You can find more here:
Holy martyr for the Church, you used your talents
to bring God’s love and mercy to earth. Yet you
realized that human fame and glory were
momentary and fleeting.
In your practice of law, you understood and were
loyal first to God’s eternal law spoken through the
successors of the Apostles. While a servant of
the king, you were a servant to the Church first.
Help me to see that loyalty to God’s laws must be
the first part of my ties and responsibilities with
others. Strengthen me to seek out what the
Church teaches. Give me the wisdom to make the
right choice, and the fortitude to carry it out. This
I ask through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
During this lovely month of June, I will include some prayers to the Holy Spirit too.
Here today are some prayers and verses from the beautiful Litany of the Holy Spirit with which we can make our own special prayer to God the Holy Spirit.
Holy Spirit, pour into us the treasures of Your Graces. Amen.
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, we place all our trust in You. Amen.
Come Holy Spirit and fill the hearts of all Your people! Amen.
Mary the Mother of Jesus, Mother of the Church, pray for us. Amen.
Our Lady of Lourdes, Patron of our Archdiocese and our MAC, Health of the Sick and Comforter of the Afflicted, pray for us. Amen.
Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us. Amen.
St Thomas More, pray for us. Amen.
St Peter, pray for us. Amen.
St Bede the Venerable, pray for us, Amen.
St Augustine of Canterbury, pray for us. Amen.
St Luke, Beloved Physician (Doctor) and companion of St Paul the Apostle, Patron of Doctors and Healthcare professionals, pray for us. Amen.
