Special Holy Spirit Novena from 15th May-23rd May 2021
Today it is Day 7 of the Special Novena of prayer to God, the Holy Spirit.
This special Novena (Nine Days of Prayer) was the first ever Novena that was prayed by Our Lady and the Apostles in the Upper Room in Jerusalem as they waited for the promised Gift of the Holy Spirit. Every year between Ascension and Pentecost, the Church traditionally begins to pray in preparation for this wonderful feast – the coming of the Holy Spirit and the Birthday of the Church. More details about this beautiful prayer here from www.catholic.org.
Here are some lovely traditional prayers from the Church Liturgy Office.
Here is a special collection of prayers on a PDF from the Liturgy Office as well which we will continue to pray until Pentecost Sunday.
Prayer focus: Month of May:
During the Month of May we remember and honour our Lady, Mary the Mother of Jesus. We especially honour her by saying the Rosary, which is her special prayer and is the prayer most dear to her heart.
Our Lady, Mary the Mother of Jesus, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, pray for us. Amen.
Rosary Mystery for today: Month of May:
Our Rosary Mysteries today are the Sorrowful Mysteries.
Every Friday, we remember the sufferings and death of Our Lord on the Cross. May we give thanks to Jesus for His deep love which made Him want to suffer for us. May we unite all that makes us sad and sorrowful to Our Blessed Lady who is known as Our Lady of Sorrows and ask her to pray for us. She is our loving Mother in heaven who cares deeply for us and who helps us with all that’s difficult, just as a Mother does.
Month of May: Weekly Prayer:
Our special prayer this week to Our Lady: Our prayer this week is called the ‘Sub tuum praesidum’.
This is a special prayer offered to our Lady, and can be of particular comfort in these days.
We fly to your protection,
O Holy Mother of God.
Despise not our petitions in our necessities,
but deliver us from all dangers,
O glorious and blessed Virgin Mary. Amen.
Prayer for the Month of May and Eastertide:
In honour of our Blessed Lady, the usual prayer every day of the ‘Angelus’ is replaced with the ‘Regina Coeli’ or Queen of Heaven.
Prayer source taken from: https://www.ourcatholicprayers.com/regina-coeli.html
Queen of Heaven, rejoice. Alleluia.
For He, whom thou wast worthy to bear. Alleluia.
Has risen as He said. Alleluia.
Pray for us to God. Alleluia.
V. Rejoice and be glad, O Virgin Mary. Alleluia.
R. Because the Lord is truly risen, Alleluia.
Let us pray
O God, Who by the Resurrection of Thy Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, hast been pleased to give joy to the whole world, grant we beseech Thee, that through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, His Mother, we may attain the joys of eternal life. Through the same Christ, our Lord. Amen.
Season of Easter: Week 7:
We are now in the seventh and final week of the joyful Easter Season. We are an Easter People and ‘Alleluia’ is our song! During these weeks of Easter (7 weeks in total) we have been celebrating the victorious and glorious rising of the Lord Jesus from death in His triumphant Resurrection that took place on Easter Sunday. We have joined in with the cries of hope and joy as we hear, ‘He is not here! He is Risen!’
We count down the days this week towards the glorious Solemnity of the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost and the Birthday of the Church! During this week we pray, ‘Come, Holy Spirit!’
