Holy Week 2019
Passion Sunday starts off this holiest of weeks in the Church’s year. It begins with the procession of palms where we commemorate the entry of Jesus into the great city of Jerusalem. It will be the last week of His earthly life. This entry into Jerusalem would be for Jesus another turn towards Calvary as He faces with determination and love the road which will take Him to the Cross. Here are some of the voices we hear during the reading of the Passion narrative from the Gospels. This week, we hear it twice. Once from either Matthew, Mark or Luke and once on Good Friday from John. As we are in Year C, we will experience the Passion as told by St Luke in his Gospel.
“I have longed to eat this Passover with you before I suffer……this is my Body which will be given for you…..this cup is the new covenant in my Blood which will be poured out for you….. Lord, there are two swords here now……Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from Me. Nevertheless, let Your will be done, not Mine….. In His anguish He prayed even more earnestly, and His sweat fell to the ground like great drops of blood….Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?…. this person was with Him too……woman, I do not know Him…..so you are the Son of God then?…….what need of witnesses have we now?….play the prophet, who hit you then?…..they brought Him before Pilate……are you the king of the Jews?…..Away with Him, give us Barabbas….Pilate was anxious to set Jesus free and addressed them again but they shouted back ‘Crucify Him! Crucify Him! Daughters of Jerusalem do not weep for Me…..When they reached the place called ‘The Skull’, they crucified Him there and the criminals also, one on the right, the other on the left….. Father, forgive them, they do not know what they are doing…..He saved others, let Him save himself if He is the Christ of God, the Chosen One….Jesus, remember me, when You come into Your kingdom…..Father, into your hands, I commit My spirit….this was a great and good man.” Excerpts from the Passion of Our Lord, Jesus Christ according to St Luke.
As we move into the solemnity of Holy Week, let us ask the Holy Spirit to help us walk ever more closely with Jesus and Mary as we remember His terrible Sufferings, His cruel Death on the Cross and His glorious Resurrection. This Week is a week which changed the world and one in which we see Christ’s deep love for each one of us. May we meditate upon Him and the freedom He brings by allowing Himself ‘to be taken for a sinner’ and while He was ‘praying all the time for sinners’ (From the Book of Isaiah Chapter 53)
Our prayer this week;
guide my mind with Your truth.
Strengthen my life by the example of Jesus.
Help me to be with Jesus in this Holy week, His last week on earth,
as He demonstrates again His total love for me.
He died so that I would no longer be separated from You.
Help me to feel how close You are and to live my life in union with You. Amen.
