27th September 2019 Memorial of St Vincent de Paul
“He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap; he seats them with princes, with the princes of his people.” Psalm 113:7-8 New International Version (NIV)
Vincent de Paul, CM, was born in France on 24 April 1581. He is someone who inspires us here in St Bede’s because as he is Patron of the Saint Vincent de Paul Society. We are blessed to have a new group of Mini Vinnies here in School from our Year 7 and 8 pupils who have begun their work to put their concern into action and live out their faith to help those who are most in need. As junior members of the wider family of the St Vincent de Paul Society, they freely give of their time to get involved with projects here in school as we reach out to those in our community and beyond in most need. Let us ask St Vincent to pray for us as we continue our work and service here in St Bede’s and our local community. Inspired by his life, prayers and example of service, may we seek to become true children of Our Heavenly Father who loves all people and cares for the poor. God’s heart for the poor is a resounding theme throughout Scripture.
St Vincent was a French Catholic priest who devoted his life to serve, minister to and care for the poor, the suffering, the unloved and the most unfortunate people in society. He founded the Congregation of the Mission and Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul along with St Louise de Marillac. He was canonized in 1737.
Our Prayer this week taken from:
Noble Saint Vincent de Paul,
beloved servant of the poor,
may we follow your example and do good works
among those whom society has abandoned,
enslaved, or forgotten.
Inspire us to feed the hungry,
to love a child,
to provide comfort and medicine to the sick,
to clothe those whose garments are threadbare,
and to offer hope and our Lord’s words
to all who need respite.
Pray for us to our beloved God
that we may commit ourselves selflessly
to doing the same charitable acts
that you did all your life,
and intercede with him
that we may have the favour of his guidance
and strength and love upon this important and meaningful work. Amen.
