Holy Season of Advent 2019

On Sunday the worldwide Church celebrated the First Sunday in Advent.  We are now in the new Church Year and we have also begun our individual Advent journeys. Happy New Year!

Advent is roughly four weeks of personal and spiritual preparation.  As we aim to make more room in our hearts and lives for God by prayer, reflection and acts of kindness towards those in need, our hearts and lives become more ready to welcome the new-born Jesus into our lives anew at Christmas.  May He find in us a warm welcome and our hearts fit and prayerfully ready for Him to make His home within.

Jesus said, “So stay awake, because you do not know the day when your master is coming…. therefore, you too must stand ready because the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” Matthew 24:40, 44

We need to be prepared.  How exactly do we do this?

We can try and make more time for God each day through prayer, attending Mass, going to extra little services/Bible studies/prayer events taking place in our parishes.

We can mark the passing of Advent with a Jesse Tree or an Advent Candle/Spiritual Advent Calendar which reflects the Birth of Jesus – the real meaning of Christmas. We can also begin by saying special Advent Prayers.

Our Liturgical colour here is now purple. Each Form group has an easy to follow Advent Calendar and Advent prayers/reflections and resources are available to all classes.  Each prayer area is draped in purple and reflects the season of prayerful waiting for the coming of Jesus.   The prayer themes for the rest of this term have been produced to help us pray well and reflect upon the coming of our Loving Saviour to our world.  We have our Advent wreath here in School which is found in the Hall which has been blessed for our use during our times of Collective Worship and Holy Mass to remind us as we count down the days leading to the Nativity of Our Blessed Lord.  We shall sing the following verse and chorus which changes week by week as we continue on our Advent journey.

Light the Advent candle one.

Now the waiting has begun,

We have started on our way:

time to think of Christmas day.

 Candle, Candle, burning bright,

shining in the cold winter night.

Candle, Candle, burning bright,

Fill our hearts with Christmas light.

Our prayer this week;

All powerful Father,

In this holy season of Advent,

Keep us awake and ever watching for Jesus’ coming again in glory,

as we remember his first coming to earth at Christmas

for no one knows the day or the hour when it will be.

Holy Spirit of God, no ear has heard, no eye has seen,

what you have prepared for those who love you.  Amen.
