On Tuesday 2 November our Year 6 team played their first Worcestershire County Cup fixture, progressing to the semi-finals after a 5-1 win.

St Bede’s started the tie on the front foot, passing the ball around and creating numerous goal scoring opportunities without taking any of them. Westacre were a very good team, with some stand out performers but Jack O and co at the heart of our defence nullified all of their attacks.

It took a scramble in their box after a fine Max A corner for us to break the deadlock. Jamesy F managed to react fastest and poke the ball into the net from close range. 1-0.

We continued to show our dominance, with some excellent understanding down both the left and right-hand sides but were unable to add to the score line. Henry and Sam caused their backline lots of problems for them to solve and Conor showed a very commanding central midfield display, with numerous attempts at goal.

Leonard in goal didn’t have a lot to do but what was thrown at him he dealt with securely, so did Ollie at the back.

Half time – 1-0.

Westacre came out for the 2nd half in a confident manner, causing our team problems of our own to resolve. We showed lots of courage and maturity with our response, frustrating Westacre to only a couple of half chances. Ethan A then started to cause their left-hand side more problems, and before they had chance to find a solution to his positivity, we were 2-0 up. Corey, capitalising from a surging run from Ethan, slotting the ball home after a couple of attempts.

Corey then made it 3 nil after being put through from a nice ball from Max A.

Westacre, however, didn’t give up and scored an excellent individual goal from close to the half way line. Game on.

Again, our team showed the capability to withstand pressure from the opposition. Jamesy breaking things up in midfield, as did Toby, Leonard and Jack in defensive positions. Harrison, now in goal produced some fine saves and seemed to take the sting out of their tails.

Ethan then showed his class again as another fine run down the right hand side gave him the opportunity to shoot from the corner of the box, which he obliged and nestled the ball into the far top left-hand corner. He then made it 5 after great pressing from Corey presented him with the ball inside their box.

A very encouraging first St Bede’s performance from all involved but a special mention to Jack O who showed leadership through his voice and individual display.

WELL DONE Year 6!

On to the Semi-Finals!
