Over the past half term during lunch, pupils across all year groups have been participating in an Inter-House Indoor Football Tournament. As the Christmas break reaches us, so does the finale of this beautifully played tournament. Each house has been fully represented by enthusiastic and talented individuals, displaying great teamwork and effort across all year groups, girls, and boys.
Rivalries have been created (in good spirit) which will continue throughout next term, leading into the 2021 Sports day.
Lets have a look how it played out:
Y8 Girls results
Jarrow v Whitby 1-1
This was a clash of the titans, with both teams fielding strong outfits for the opening game of the tournament. Chances were presented for both teams, however, neither team could capitalise early on. It was late in the game for the first strike to be dealt, a fine solo effort from Grace R (8AGA) gave Jarrow the advantage, which should have been enough, if it wasn’t for a determined Ebony S (8AGA). Ebony intercepted a rare loose pass from the outstanding Jarrow, showed a bit of skill to evade an oncoming defender and slotted home the equaliser, which saw the spectators go wild.
Lindisfarne v Jarrow 0-2
Once again Jarrow went into the tie, fielding a strong and talented line up and they did not take long to get a foothold in the game. An outstanding bit of play by Alyssa B (8MDI) and Georgia W (8MDI) set up the impressive Grace R (8AGA), who did not disappoint and dispatched an unstoppable finish into the far corner. 1-0! This galvanised Jarrow even more, who dominated the remainder of the game, with Grace R smashing home her 2nd of the game and 3rd of the tournament – 2-0 game over.
Whitby v Iona 1-1
It was Whitby that had the lion share of this fixture early on, however, they did not have anything to show for it. An impressive defensive display from Iona, limited Whitby to any clear-cut chances. This saw Iona grow in confidence, creating chances for themselves to take a surprising lead. However, this was also their downfall as gaps now appeared. A skilful Ebony S (8AGA) linked up with the impressive Klaudia W (8KBR) and took advantage, breaking through their back line, Ebony delivered a precise finish to give Whitby the lead. Whitby continued to show their dominance, creating more chances without finding the net but looked in complete control. A rare mistake saw an opening for Iona late on and Tia S (8HFA) took full advantage of this, driving the ball past the excellent Whitby goalkeeper after great work from Teagan G (8MDI) – 1-1, game tied.
Lindisfarne v Whitby 1-2
Lindisfarne started off the game really well, creating chances for Megan T (8MDI) to put the home side in front. However, it was Klaudia W (8KBR), who powerfully dribbled through the middle of the pitch, who got the scoring underway. After going past a couple of Lindisfarne defenders, Klaudia blasted a shot into the top corner, which left the Lindisfarne goalkeeper with little chance.
Lindisfarne responded extremely positive, creating more chances of their own, with Megan T their driving force and Frankie M (8MDI) and Grace T (8MDI) preventing any Whitby forward advantages. It was one of Megan’s forceful runs down the outside that saw Whitby equalise, after producing an impressive counter attack, she slotted the ball past the on rushing Whitby goalkeeper to make the tie all square with minutes to play.
However, Klaudia had other ideas and produced an identical charge through the middle delivering a fatal blow to Lindisfarne’s spirits.
Iona v Jarrow 0-3
Iona started the game where they left off from their previous game, full of confidence. However, this was soon dealt a huge blow when Grace R (8AGA) scored 2 goals in quick succession. This took Grace clear at the top of goals scored and filed her with confidence. She wasn’t finished there. Single handily, Grace took any hope away from Iona, finishing off a nice move, with a clever early finish, leaving the Iona goalkeeper stuck watching the ball fly past her into the back of the net.
Game over – title over! This impressive 3-0 win hands Jarrow the tournament and sees their star player take control of the Top Goal scorer accolade.
Lindisfarne v Iona 0-2
Final game of the tournament saw a rearranged fixture between Lindisfarne and Iona after their initial game got postponed on the opening day.
Lindisfarne looked the more likely to score once again, but nobody wanted to put the ball in the back of the net. This frustration grew amongst the Lindisfarne players and Teagan G (8MDI) took full advantage of this delivering a unstoppable shot from close range, followed by a celebration of joy.
Alicia B (8HFA) was a constant nuisance to Lindisfarne, and she finally got her reward for her hard work, finishing off a lovely passage of play to see off the game. 2-0 and an excellent game to finish off the tournament.
Champions – Jarrow
Top goal scorer – Grace R (8AGA)
